People who have had a bad experience with Internet movers are likely to be very hesitant to try the experience again, and are likely to feel that all Internet based movers are bad. This woman despite careful research and despite choosing a company that had a good rating with the BBB, found herself in the middle of a hostage load situation just a few short weeks ago. After raising the load estimate and asking far more than the original moving cost estimate, the scam company demanded payment in full or threatened that they would hold the household goods in storage.
The movers may have been bluffing a bit about the hostage threat. As one participant on the anti-moving scam bulletin board noted, they may have put the goods in storage waiting for another load going in the same direction so they could make more money on the move. This helpful person was referring to the well known pattern among modern day internet brokers. They give low estimates over the phone to rope in customers. Then they take their commission cut. And then, with what’s left, they farm out the move to a second rate moving company willing to take the job. The sub-contracted moving company now devices ways to raise the cost of the move so they can make their profit.
With this type of scam, we are not just talking about monetary loss. Because the second rate movers, who get the subcontracted assignments, frequently do not have the practiced moving skills of the larger companies. Case in point, when this woman’s goods finally arrived at the destination, they were broken up and badly damaged. The woman also noticed that her possessions arrived in a different truck then they had been sent in . This was further evidence that her possessions had sat in storage until a subcontracting mover could be found. In addition to the lower standards of the second rate companies, the continual loading and unloading of the household items exposed them to even further damage.
With all that said, the participant who noted that not all Internet moving companies are bad, had a point. He did caution all reading the thread to do three things. 1) get a home, as opposed to an over the phone estimate 2) Check out the company with the BBB and the FMCSA. And 3) Don’t base your decision solely on price.
Point three can’t be overstated because that’s the main technique shady moving scam companies will use to rope in victims. It must be noted, however, that this woman did check out the company with both the BBB and the FMCSA. So sometimes that isn’t enough.
