Slowly Expanding Your Wine IQ
Several years ago I started to pay attention to the different types of wine that people were ordering when I went out to dinner with family, friends and clients. I would not consider myself to be even remotely knowledgeable about wines. After all, it is a tremendous industry with a lot of things to know and experience. I love to drink wine but my knowledge of wine pales in comparison to what others evidently know judging by the questions they ask when they order wine.
One of the first things I did was purchase a really nice Haier wine cooler which has a forty eight bottle capacity. I made room for the cooler in my basement family room near the bar. It really is the perfect place for it. The model that I bought has a sleek black exterior with a glass front door and a stainless steel handle. It also has a digital readout on the top that shows the interior temperature which can be displayed in either Fahrenheit or Celsius. The drawers slide in and out so that you do not need to disturb every bottle of wine just to see the label so you can find the one that you are looking for. The wine inside is kept at a constant fifty one degrees Fahrenheit which is the optimal temperature for red wine. There is an option to operate a second zone at a colder temperature for white wines.
In the past I had limited my wine selection to easy choices like California cabernet or merlot. These are fine wines especially if you understand the best vintages which you will end up paying a bit more for. Now I look for wines by region depending on what I’m having for dinner. I found that I actually prefer Australian Shiraz to most merlot wines for most Chicken dinners. The shiraz is slightly sweeter I find. Also, my local wine store gave me a small card with ratings for different vintages for different types of wine by region. I carry this card around and refer to it all the time. Based on the card, the 2005 Chilean cabernet was a fine vintage. I tried such a wine and found it to be really delicious. Now I’ve become a bit adventurous and have explored wines from all over Europe including Germany, Spain and Portugal. Its amazing how unique wines from different countries can be. I suppose that’s part of the joy of drinking wine–experiencing the different types.
I noticed that the door was a bit wobbly and found that one of the bolts that attach the hinge to the body of the cooler was loose. Since this is a fairly expensive item, I didn’t want to risk over tightening the bold so I used a digital torque wrench to tighten the bolt, even though it wasn’t necessary. Right now my wine refrigerator is fully stocked and there is not one duplicate bottle in it. I don’t think I will ever stop discovering new wines to taste and enjoy.
