Fossil fuels and their combustion is a direct cause of increased in global temperature and climate. Fossil fuels are made from heat, pressure and animal and plant matter, which over time formed into oil, coal and gas. The issues with fossil fuels is firstly, there is only a limited supply of fossil fuels, so we need to evolve to use other forms of energy. Secondly fossil fuels contain stored carbon from the animal and plant mater that formed them. As we burn fossil fuels this carbon is released back into the atmosphere in the form of carbon dioxide. There is a direct relationship between increasing temperatures and the increasing levels of carbon dioxide. For these two reasons we need to move onto more sustainable and renewable forms of energy, and also low carbon and carbon neutral fuels. Biomass can be used as a renewable, carbon neutral energy source. One of the most popular forms of biomass energy currently is a premium wood pellet used in pellet stoves and boilers. Premium wood pellets are made up of wood industry waste, in the form of pine, spruce and oak waste. These waste materials are compressed into pellets, which give increased density; uniform size and shape which makes the fuel easier to handle and increased combustion efficiency.

The ash percentages of premium wood pellets is very low, as all bark is removed. Premium quality wood pellets also have very low moisture content, which gives increased combustion efficiency and more heat is produced. The features of premium wood pellets mean they are very low maintenance, and so require much less work than a traditional log stove for example. Some pellet stoves and boilers on premium wood pellets can operate for weeks and even months without maintenance. The simple problem with looking to premium wood pellets as ‘the solution’ is the limited supply of softwood and hardwood waste to produce the pellets. In the future the supply of wood waste will not meet the demands of the wood pellet market, which will lead to issues. There are potentially hundreds of different biomass materials, mostly which are seen as a waste issue which could be turned into fuel pellets. The issue that people need to be aware of these pellets contain more ash and corrosion. So they are not suitable to use in every pellet stove and boiler. Purchasing a pellet burner that can take advantage of these pellets makes sense though, as they required less energy to produce and will be cheaper for the user. Using more biomass to produce fuel pellets is a renewable.
